Denmead Striders has a team of experienced coaches, qualified to UK Athletics standards. Coaching is structured to enable members to run to their full potential. General training schedules for the club session on Wednesday nights are produced twice a year, summer and winter. Individual schedules can be prepared for Club members, tailored to suit their needs for any distance from 5 km through to the Marathon. Coaches can be consulted and are able to discuss and offer advice on the many aspects of running/training.
Club members have enjoyed success at various distances and in addition to road running, there is a strong element who enjoy cross country and multi sport events - the club membership includes a number of keen triathletes.
The Club have done particularly well in the Cross Country League (also known as the Today's Runner League) where the emphasis is on team participation. The mens and ladies teams have won the League twice and represented Hampshire in the National Final. To broaden and develop the Club, during the 2002/2003 season, the members joined the Hampshire Road Race League, where the Teams won their respective Divisions. The teams have continued to enjoy success and the Men won the League Championship in the 2004/5 season. The team captain and coaches actively encourage members to participate to the best of their ability.
2006 saw the Club pay for members to enter teams for relay events, starting with the Clarendon Way Marathon Relay in October. In 2007, they paid for several entries into the Midsummer Dream event in Seaton, Devon and subsidised many Striders to run in the Ryde 10M.
The coaching team meet regularly to plan and discuss the best way forward, taking into account feedback from the membership. The team are always open to new ideas and actively encourage suitably experienced members to qualify as coaches.
