DENMEAD STRIDERS AGM

15 January 2008

Reports from Committee Members

Secretary Review

As many of you are aware this is the second year of the new governing body for our sport (U.K.Athletics).  Part of the restructuring included the way fees are levied; the old scale payment based on club size was abolished and replaced by a two tier system; a flat fee for the club, and an individual levy for each member.

As part of the planned changes, the individual fee of £3 in 2007 has risen to £5 for 2008. Therefore the Club as announced at last years (2007) AGM, has increased the club membership fee to £15 from 1st January 2008.

Richard Cox

Membership Review

The club enjoyed a very good year with 97 paid up members and 8 life members.

Julia Revill

Treasurer Review

The Club incurred expenditure of £2465.27 covered by income from a number of sources including subscriptions, sales of club kit and hosting the final round of the Todays Cross Country.  The club does not make a profit, but aims to balance the books on a year to year basis.  A detailed copy of this years financial statement is available on request.

Publicity Review

The News has improved its coverage of local athletics thanks to meetings between Gary and Jordon Cross from the News.

Due to the changed layout at Waterlooville Swimming Pool we have lost our notice board, but club information is now posted in the Denmead Health Centre.

Gary McCawley

Club Captain Review

We had a very encouraging turnout for the HRRL helped by the club championships

HRRL    Womans A team came 3rd

            Mens      A team came 7th

It is becoming increasing difficult to hold the races due to the every increasing cost of policing the events.  The HRRL organizers are seeking ways to resolve the problem, including earlier starts and higher entry fees

Julia Revill

Cross Country Review

Simon took over as Cross Country Representative from Linda Wheelan during the season.  The Cub wishes to thank Linda for all her hard work over the previous season and especially the outstanding organization of the Staunton Park home race, an excellent show case for the Club.

Simon continues the good work with the Clubs standing after three races moving from 8th to 6th to 4th place

Simon Clark

Coaching Review

1.   A big thank you to all the coaches.  They have done an excellent job this year, delivering sessions and looking after people well.

2.   We hope all the members feel they have benefited from training schedules and the coaching team’s efforts.

3.   In 2007, Viv qualified as a level two coach.  We are also fortunate that in the latter part of 2007 two more members Simon Clark & Tony Smith have qualified as level one coaches.

4.   In March 2008, Julia Revill will undertake a level one training course & hopefully Gary McCawley will follow suit later in the year.

5.   This will eventually give Denmead Striders an extensive coaching team of eight qualified UKA coaches. We hope you will give all of the coaches your full support, especially the new ones.

6.   The striders have been well represented in the Hampshire road race and Todays Runner leagues thanks to Julia, our club captain, and Simon Clark, both encouraging people to enter races.  Simon also organises the newly renamed striders league, giving members something to aim at.

7.   We have tried to give some variety to the coaching but have kept old favourites in the schedules eg handicaps & everybody’s favourite session – hills.

8.   We welcome any comments or ideas about the training sessions, so tell the coaches what you think or if you prefer, use the feedback form on the website.

The Denmead 10k

Club Championship

Simon developed and introduced this season long competition, encompassing both the Today’s Runner Cross Country and the HRRL races.  The competition is based on a points system and is designed specifically to encourage Club Members of differing ability to compete on a regular basis on level terms with the Club’s “elite” athletes.

The season runs from September to the following May and was support by 58 Participants (2007 season) and 45 participants this current season.

Four names were proposed and discussed for this Championship.  A vote was taken and the competition will be called the ‘Striders League’

This years awards evening will be an “American Supper” at the Catherington Village Hall on Friday 8th February @ 7.30

The Burtonian Trophy would be arranged by the awards committee. A short list will be offered to the members at the Awards Evening and a ballot taken. In the event of a tie, the Vice Chairman has the casting vote.

The Joyce Burton Trophy be in the “gift” of the Club Chairman in office relating to the year of the awards; eg Dennis to award this year as Chairman in 2007.
